MB THE MANLY DAILY, Friday, September 11, 2009 21 Manly Daily THE Travelled trio bridge gap Danielle Nicastri Fashion designers Claire Murphy, Polly Epov and Brigid Whelan of the I Am label. Picture: BRADEN FASTIER THREE talented young designers have travelled the world to bring their label and their latest designs to a Manly fashion event at The New Brighton Hotel on The Corso. StyleXpose is both a showcase and competition for young, aspiring designers and models which will run over three weeks, with winners announced at the grand final on Wednesday, October 14. These three designers will travel down the catwalk in two weeks, the first time their collection from label ''i am'' will be revealed. For the Manly photo-shoot the designers came from different locations -- Claire Murphy from work in Killara, Polly Epov the District Court and Brigid Whelan after finishing a three-hour uni exam. ''When you travel, you open up to be the person you are, '' fashion co-designer Claire Murphy said. ''You want to express yourself with radiance, confidence and individuality.'' This idea led to the girls, aged 21 and under, bringing a fashion label to life and this philosophy to women through their designs. ''The fact that you don't have to be so structured all the time (on holiday) allows you to relax and completely enjoy the present moment,'' Ms Murphy said.''By doing so you allow yourself to radiate the inner self.'' The three designers have been to Europe and the US, not only as tourists but to work and live in different countries for up to a year, as well as travelling to Vietnam on design business. ''Everything is so different in every country in the way people think and how they do things,'' Ms Murphy said. Like many uni students, the three high school friends balance work with study -- they're all currently studying for various degrees at different universities. But this Wednesday is ''i am'' night when they plan their next moves, go through designs and their business schedule. Planning for the label took off in January and gives them something to be passionate about in between studies. ''It is sometimes hard to get in touch with each other, we all live separate lives,'' co- designer Ms Epov said. ''It became easier and easier and took a life of it's own. We realised how easy it was although we learned quite a lot of lessons,'' she said. The designers want to fill a gap in the market, where they say good clothes are too expensive or cheap and there is no middle ground, unlike other countries. ''The designs are youthful, radiant and sophisticated and most of all clothes that allow women to feel beautiful without having to show too much skin,'' Murphy said. Those at the fashion debut can expect to see citrus pinks, summer florals and a touch of metallic with yellow neon added to the colour spectrum, to wear with black and white basics. ''We've created clothing for the female who changes from moment to moment,'' Ms Murphy said. ''Our collection is versatile to allow her to do that with ease.'' The winning designers of the StyleXpose competition will have the opportunity to sell their collection at Mint Shop in Manly for a limited time, and the winning model will win a contract with Bliss Model Management. ''To finally see the finished garments and all that our work has gone into them will be amazing,'' Ms Whelan said.
