Ratings: Take the phone off the hook; Very good; Good; Readable; Better off with the cereal box Creations of master Rating: Title: Homer and Langley Author: E. L. Doctorow RRP: $29.99 Reviewer: John Ruszczyk A NEW book from one of America's most respected writers is always welcome and Doctorow is a beautiful writer. In this book he creates an eerie atmosphere in a house inhabited by two brothers, one blind and the other a genuine eccentric. The story is crafted by Doctorow from the real life characters of Homer and Langley Collyer -- residents of New York City who attempted to live their lives with as little contact with the outside world as possible. Being rich and well-educated they were able to that, but their home was overflowing with the detritus of the modern world that they collected. Doctorow gives us the tale through the voice of the blind Homer. What this blind man senses, what he knows to be there, what he does not comment on, how he describes a face are creations of a master craftsman. Travel between worlds Rating: Title: Transition Author: Iain Banks RRP: $32.99 Reviewer: Natasha Lawther BANKS' new novel is set in a world parallel to our own, run by an organisation called The Concern. This vaguely sinister organisation has developed a way to travel between worlds, and has the object of improving the lot of less enlightened societies than their own -- though as the book goes on it becomes clear that their motivations are not entirely altruistic. The hero of Transition has acquired the skill of travelling between worlds without the help of The Concern, something they find deeply troubling, and he must struggle to stay one step ahead of them as they track him through realities. These other worlds describe a way of life that could have been, for instance, a version of Paris run by the descendants of Genghis Khan. This is a fast-paced, philosophically inclined adventure Perfect for layman Rating: Title: Wildlife of Australia Author: Louise Egerton and Jiri Lochman RRP: $59.99 Reviewer: John Ruszczyk THIS new book, written by local author Louise Egerton, will become a standard reference for the general public i.e. you and I. Why? Because you do not have to be a scientist or wade through pages of dry paragraphs to learn about the animals with which we share this country. For that I am grateful. The book discusses the complete range of living creatures in Australia. There are, of course, chapters on mammals, birds and reptiles but it also covers frogs, freshwater fish and invertebrates. For those who have a shelf full of narrowly focused books this is great. One hefty volume gives us loads of information about all these creatures. The Jiri Lochman photographs are beautiful, and there is a list of all the scientific names, for the serious ones among us, and a collection of relevant websites. Fall under the spell Rating: Title: Broken Fences Author: Camilla Noli RRP: $24.99 Reviewer: Catherine Proctor WHEN a new family move in next door to Clair's family, she takes an instant dislike to Chelsea, the spoilt only child. Clair's children, Becky and Martin, however, feel quite differently to her and she is powerless to prevent them from falling under the spell of Chelsea. As Clair tries to protect her family it all goes horribly wrong, especially after a tragic accident that Clair interprets as something far more sinister. But as she reacts to what is going on her children start to rebel and Clair loses her grip on her children and her grasp on reality. Camilla Noli has created a tense, taught psychological thriller that is all the more potent for having been told in the first person. As a reader, you are at once trapped in the darkness of Clair's head, yet also watching in horror as she reacts to events around her. New face of fantasy writing in Oz Rating: Title: The Wounded Guardian Author: Duncan Lay RRP: $20.99 Reviewer: Rebecca Lang This book is not subject to the 10 per cent discount offer REDEMPTION looms large in Duncan Lay's debut novel, The Wounded Guardian, in which an orphan and a desperate queen thwart the retirement plans of a traumatised war veteran. Martil is a soldier who in company with his fellow Ralloran countrymen has committed a host of atrocities, including killing women and children, all in the name of war, earning them the title ''the Butchers of Bellic''. He leaves his country to try and forget his past and escape his double-edged reputation, but finds the old habits of a warrior die hard. After an attack by bandits, which he successfully fends off, he finds himself in charge of the chief bandit's daughter, six-year-old Karia. It is this unlikely relationship that adds another dimension to Martil's character as he gradually undergoes a transformation, rediscovering his purpose and pride. Lay's descriptive passages will engage fantasy fans with weaponry, clothing and lodgings all described in minute detail. And the story is dense with twists and turns as assassins, archbishops, greedy nobles and scheming soldiers are thrown into the mix. When Martil discovers the famed Dragon Sword, a magical weapon that only the Queen's champion can wield, and later rescues Queen Merren, who is being held prisoner by her cousin Duke Gello, the story really takes off. Military buffs will appreciate the fighting tactics, and perhaps even the violent and bloody battles that move the story along. Heroism, romance, heartache, sex, violence, death and disappointment -- The Wounded Guardian has it all in spades.
