Page 52 Refusing to be old Cash back for charity Jesse Phillips FOLLOWING more than two years of bureaucratic bungling, Mona Vale Hospital Auxillary is likely to receive money it raised -- almost two decades ago -- from a State Government trust fund. It asked for about $250,000 but probably only 80 per cent of that amount will be returned to the group, with the government set to hang on to the other 20 per cent indefinitely. The money, raised by the hos- pital's auxiliaries, was originally to go towards building a hospice for terminally-ill patients. When the auxiliaries ceased tak- ing donations in October 1996 the money was locked up in a trust account operated by NSW Health and has earned considerable interest, with the balance now about $251,000. Problems arose when the auxili- ary, citing the changing nature of treating the terminally ill, decided it wanted to use the money to extend the hospital's palliative care cottage instead of building a hospice. The slightly different purpose led to the Attorney-General's office requesting every receipt for do- nations -- some as small as $2 from 15 years ago -- so all donors could be contacted to ensure they did not oppose the money going to a palli- ative care unit instead of a hospice. ToPage2 Musician Ian likes fiddling around at sea Fiddler on the beach: Ian Cooper will play at the Manly Jazz Festival next month. Picture: MARTIN LANGE PP319436 Danielle Nicastri AT first glance Ian Cooper looks like a yachtsman whose fiddle is his hobby. But the opposite is true for the born- musician, a regular guest artist of jazz trumpeter James Morrison who has played with international opera singer Andrea Bocelli. Back from a tour of Europe two weeks ago, Mr Cooper will be playing at this year's 32nd Annual CareFusion Manly Jazz Festival on the October long weekend. ''I do a lot of listening on the yacht and sailing for my own enjoyment, where I have little to do with a fiddle,'' Mr Cooper said. ''I'm always inspired by anything I hear, whether it's in a pub, at a festival or a CD on the boat, which I might then play at the Manly Jazz Festival,'' he said. At the age of four he began learning the fiddle from his musician mother and a year later began competing in eisteddfods. Mr Cooper spent his childhood performing throughout America, Europe and Japan and, aged eight, was awarded a scholarship to the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney.
