DISGRACE A decade of inaction has left Seaforth TAFE in ruins Jesse Phillips ALMOST 10 years after it was closed Seaforth TAFE remains a mouldering ruin, a victim of neglect and frequent vandalism. On the weekend police arrested six youths allegedly causing more damage inside the building. No charges have been laid, but it again highlights the need for better security at the site and the need for the State Government to finally make a decision on what to do with it. Despite repeated requests the government has given no indi- cation on when they intend to sell the site, but it has continually ruled out reopening it as a TAFE or other type of education facility. Education Minister Verity Firth's office have continually said the TAFE was closed because of low enrolments, constraints of the site in terms of size and location and because it was ''surplus to need.'' In negotiations with Manly Council the Department of Edu- cation and Training Ms Firth indi- cated it would be unacceptable for the site to be sold to a private education provider, said Manly Mayor Jean Hay. ''There was definitely some interest in it for a private edu- cation facility but the minister and her adviser said 'oh no we can't do that because it would be in competition with the public sys- tem' which just seems crazy to me,'' Cr Hay said. While the government sits on its hands and refuses to acknowl- edge it has completely bungled the handling of the site, local activists are adamant the inaction is an indication the government is terrified of taking on the union movement, who have a black ban on construction or demolition of the site.
