THE MANLY DAILY, Wednesday, October 7, 2009 7 NEWS > www.manlydaily.com.au Funding pledge ensures future for disabled camps Paul Lynch with a group of children during yesterday's visit. Picture: BRADEN FASTIER Jesse Phillips Is the government doing enough to help children with disabilities? www.manlydaily.com.au IT'S now holding its first muscular dystrophy camp and State Government funding will ensure Narrabeen's Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation can run them for the next three years. The camps, for kids with the degenerative disease, was given a boost yesterday with Disabilities Services Minister Paul Lynch pledging $300,000. The money will fund three Narrabeen-based camps over the next three years and smaller retreats at a variety of locations. David Jack, chief executive officer of Muscular Dystrophy NSW, said this year was the first time a camp had been held in NSW. He said the five-day camps were providing a vital service for the kids and respite for their carers. ''About one third of the kids come from regional NSW,'' Mr Jack said. ''It's great for the kids, a lot of whom are wheelchair-bound. They're often socially isolated and don't get the chance to mix with other's who have muscular dystrophy. ''It's also really important for the carers and gives them a break from the 24-hour seven- day-a-week care that is required. For some it is the first time in 15 years they have had time off.'' Mr Lynch said the primary focus of the camps and retreats was to provide respite, but also deliver activities designed to promote positive self-esteem and encourage social interaction. ''I have no doubt that those who attend the camps and retreats will go away with memorable experiences,'' he said. Workers allegedly underpaid Rebecca Woolley YOUNG bar and restaurant staff employed by the Bavarian Hos- pitality Group, which owns Manly's Bavarian Bier Cafe´ , were allegedly underpaid to work their regular shifts between October 2007 and November 2008. The Bavarian Hospitality Group -- which owns the popular West Esplanade nightspot and a string of other hotels -- is now being prosecuted by the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO). The FWO alleges about 800 cas- ual workers at the Lowenbrau Keller (CBD), Bavarian Bier Cafe´ (Manly, York Street, O'Connell Street, Entertainment Quarter and Parramatta), Uber Bar (CBD) and The Argyle (CBD) were alleg- edly underpaid by $334,000. Although the group co-operated with the Fair Work Ombudsman and repaid cash missing from workers' pay packets, a spokes- man said it would still pursue the Bavarian Hospitality Group in the Chief Magistrate's Court. This was because of the amount of cash withheld -- the biggest figure owed to one individual being $3642 -- was for young and low paid workers. ''The workers have been paid back,'' he said. ''But because of the significance of the amounts involved and a lot of them were young workers the litigation (will continue).'' Fair Work Ombudsman Execu- tive Director Michael Campbell said the agency was seeking a financial penalty for the breach which could see Bavarian hit with a maximum $33,000 fine. Court documents said Bavarian locked employees into workplace agreements in 2007 which paid slightly above the minimum hourly rate but did not account for future increases. A hearing was listed for yesterday but was ad- journed and is expected to take place on October 19.
