Mentor matters Pages 12 Page 9 Bus alcohol protest Jesse Phillips BUS drivers are refusing to be transferred to Mona Vale depot because its late-night routes have a reputation for abuse and viol- ence from inebriated passengers. Darryl Malone, the divisional president of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, said the northern beaches had many well-known ''trouble-spots'' for drivers includ- ing Avalon, Mona Vale, Newport and Warringah Mall. The situation has now led to numerous drivers refusing to be transferred to Mona Vale depot because they are worried for their safety at the hands of drunken louts. ''It's been an ongoing concern on the northern beaches for a number of years because it has been regarded as a high drug and alcohol area,'' Mr Malone said. ''There would be some drivers who don't want to put them- selves into Mona Vale (depot) for that reason.'' Mr Malone described the viol- ence and abuse as ''spasmodic.'' He said it usually occurred on the late night runs on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. He said buses being used as ''moving targets'' by youths throwing rocks and eggs was com- mon, as were drivers caught in the middle of drunken disputes and either threatened or abused. ''Because of the heavy load we have the buses might run late, and then there is a stop with 10 or 20 people getting on paying cash, and it slows it down even more.
