He has also vowed to work to unite the Liberal Party. ''I probably should, I suppose, apolo- gise now for all my errors of the past, and make a clean breast of them, if you like, and ask the public to judge me from this point,'' Mr Abbott said. In the end it was the difference of one vote that elevated the Warringah MP to the Liberal leadership. Yesterday morning, following a leader- ship spill called for by Mr Abbott over the ETS issue, the Warringah MP triumphed, defeating leadership favourite Joe Hockey and former leader Malcolm Turnbull. In the first round of the party room vote, Mr Abbott received 35 votes, Mr Turnbull 26 and Mr Hockey 23. Mr Abbott then beat Mr Turnbull by 42 votes to 41. He then called for an unprecedented secret ballot on the ETS which resulted in 54 MPs voting for, and 29 against, referring the legislation to a committee to report back to Parliament in February.
