It is still not known what Eco Villages plans for the site, but Unions NSW confirmed yesterday it had reached a deal. Unions NSW did not elaborate on the nature of the deal or if there had been any change to the $15 million Eco Villages previously agreed to pay for the site. Speculation is Eco Villages has negotiated a 12-month settlement for the former iconic worker's retreat. But the revelation of a new deal raises more questions than it answers, with any potential devel- opment severely constrained by the fact Planning Minister Kristina Keneally in April refused Eco Village's DA to build 25 luxury homes on the waterfront site. To the praise of local activists, Ms Keneally also said the site should be listed on the State Heritage Register as it met six out of seven criteria for heritage list- ing. ''The listing will ensure there are minimum standards of main- tenance for the buildings on the site, and that any future develop- ment application for the site will be referred to the NSW Heritage Council,'' Ms Keneally said then. One month after the minister's DA refusal, Eco Villages' co- director, Allen Linz, told The Manly Daily he was disappointed with Ms Keneally's decision but would not give up on the site and still had ambitions for some form of development and would ''de- velop other strategies'' for the area. At the time Mr Linz said Eco Villages would not be seeking the return of the deposit it paid to Unions NSW in 2007, believed to be in the order of $1 million. ''The one thing I will say is that I still firmly believe in the site and we will develop other strategies -- for the Friends of Currawong we have not thrown the towel in,'' Mr Linz said in May.
