The two-year-old was playing with a friend in the sand near the steps to the beach last Thursday when she came across the needle. ''She was digging in the sand, as kids do, and the next thing she was screaming and pulled her hand out of the sand and the syringe was stuck under her thumbnail,'' Ms Havlik said. ''At first I didn't know what she was screaming about, maybe some glass or a crab, but I raced over to her and saw it and immediately pulled it out. ''It drew some blood.'' After washing the wound Ms Havlik, of Dee Why, took Tanika to Warringah Medical Centre before heading to hospital.
