In January the council cut the length of time people could park in numerous streets in the Manly CBD from one hour to 30 minutes. At the same time, 15-minute zones were also changed to 30-minute ones. Manly Council general manager Henry Wong said the changes simply brought the affected areas into line with the rest of the Manly CBD but shopkeepers said it had already affec- ted their businesses. Plaza Barber Shop owner Rocky Carlino said his and other shops are losing customers. ‘‘It doesn’t give my customers time to come in and sit down, and wait to have their hair cut – they keep rushing out, saying they have to move their car before it gets booked,’’ he said. ‘‘Before they could park in Sydney Rd or Whistler St, just metres from our shops, and walk here but now they can’t. They could get a haircut, visit the post office and have a cup of coffee, but now they don’t have time.’’ Manly Chamber of Commerce executive officer Margot Stolle said the 30-minute limit is ‘‘too short for people to be able to park, get out, visit a business or two and leave without overstaying’’. ‘‘So we are trying to petition the council to revise that decision,’’ she said. ‘‘We’ve met Mr Wong a few times and we’re trying to go through the correct processes with him to change it back. He hasn’t said yes and he hasn’t said no.’’ Mr Wong said the change followed a series of workshops with councillors and stakeholders late last year. ‘‘The aim was to increase the number of parking opportunities in Manly,’’ he said. ‘‘We looked at various options. Ninety per cent of the people who park in Manly park here for free. We still have two-hour parking in Victoria Pde and one-hour parking in Wentworth St, and of course there is free two-hour parking in all the parking stations.’’ Mr Wong said changing 30-minute zones back to 60-minute zones ‘‘has its upsides and its downsides’’. ‘‘The upside is people can park in the street and not have to rush back to their cars,’’ he said. ‘‘The downside is potentially reducing by half the num- ber of on-street parking spaces from 800 to 400.’’ ●● More stories: Page 5 Dee Why 824 Pittwater Rd.
