The Warringah MP said on 60 Minutes on Channel 9 on Sunday night: ''I probably feel a bit threatened (by homosexu- ality), as so many people do.'' Asked to expand on the com- ment on the ABCTV's 7.30 Report on Monday night, Mr Abbott said: ''There is no doubt that it (homosexuality) chal- lenges, if you like, orthodox notions of the right order of things.'' Those comments have come under fire from members of the gay and lesbian community, including Dave Burrell, who helped establish the Manly community group. Mr Burrell said Mr Abbott was appealing to an outdated and discriminatory view that homosexuality threatened tra- ditional institutions such as marriage. He said it was incredibly alarming that the alternative prime minister held such views, which would cause heartache for young people coming to terms with their sexuality. ''It sends the wrong message to them -- they are already in a position where they are feeling vulnerable about things they have no control over,'' Mr Burrell said. ''We have a thriving group here in Tony Abbott's own electorate and I would invite him to come to our next event.''
