Picture: BRADEN FASTIER ~PP401615 THE WARRINGAH electoral office turned into a battleground yesterday as local election candi- dates confronted each other after a shock preference deal snub. Greens candidate Matthew Drake-Brockman and Labor can- didate Hugh Zochling exchanged heated words following the elec- tion ballot draw after the surprise announcement that the Greens would not direct any preferences to Labor in Warringah. The Greens' national office has previously agreed to direct preferences to Labor ahead of the Coalition in 54 lower-house seats in exchange for Labor preferences in the Senate. Mr Drake-Brockman said the decision not to direct preferences to either major party had been made at a local level based on their opponents' environmental poli- cies, and he went on to criticise his party for accepting preference deals in other Federal seats. ''Firstly, we don't believe that the people of Warringah should be denied their right to vote,'' he said. ''I think people have been a bit disenfranchised with us preferencing Labor, so we're not going to do that, we are actually going to leave it up to people -- it's really essentially for them to de- cide. ''We're not happy with Labor or Liberal on the issue of climate change. Labor's given us a lot of spin, Liberal, under Tony Abbott, have said it's complete crap.'' But Mr Zochling accused The Greens of playing into Mr Abbott's hands by refusing any preference arrangements. ''How-to-votes and preference arrangements are done for a reason, and I think it's done to indicate to voters that their vote can count for a lot more than their first preference,'' he said.
